Why?

I volunter with the local Humane Society where I live and also foster dogs from time to time. Right now, I have Tristan, the cutie pie in my profile pic. Why is it that black dogs are slower to adopt out??!! I've heard statistically adptions go small dogs over large, long hair over short and light over dark. Tristan is a beauty and we've taught him very good manners. Why doesn't any one want to adopt this sweetheart!!!! I guess only if he had purebred papers.....disgusts me.

Grieving for Blacky

Dears,

Blacky was abandoned dog on the street of Belgrade, when ever I was coming there I was meeting him in-front of one cafe. He became my precious friend. I was feeding him, curing him when ever I had possibility to do so.

Last time when I came to Belgrade, I heard Blacky was injured by car. I thin veterinary did mistake not operating him, and he died.
I still remember his eyes looking into me last time.

I pray for him to be born in new much happier incarnation , and I pray that owners do not trow out of home their pets, never.

But last night walking along the street, I saw beautiful young Dalmatian abandoned too, I was calling him, he escaped frightened by people.......

What is psychology of people who can leave their pets, must be deep suffering and ignorance in themselves.....

Anyone wants to share feeling about with me?

So I made major inroads w/ my parents this weekend....they started off with a no dogs in the house/my dog could sleep in the garage policy, which quickly changed to she could hang out in the house but not sit on the cushy furniture, which then changed to my mom setting up a little "bed" for Boo at the bottom of the guest bed....Do you think it could be b/c I said I might stay at a campground instead if my dog wasn't allowed in the house before I travelled out their house? Boo was bummed that she couldn't hang out on the furniture but it was much better than the alternative.

There was recenly an article in BARK magazine about how black dogs are mostly overlooked and put to death in higher numbers then other dogs at shelters.

Trying to find a FOREVER FAMILY For 2 Black Labs.

I am fostering two black lab females that are looking for a forever family. Their family cannot take care of them anymore and were going to doggee jail. A lady was outside of a store trying to give two pups away. I walked by and a little girl yelled " do you want a puppy, They are FREE". I walked over and talked with the family for a minute. The mother said that if she didn't find a home for the two than they would have to go to the pound. I know how many babies are there and knew what would happen to them. I told her that if she could not find a home for them that I would help. She came to the house with the mother and the baby. Now, her husband said that the mother had to go as well. They could not have her fixed, so she was going to the pound too. I could not let that happen.

Summer the mother, is 2yrs and Baby Girl is a yr old. They both are very lovable. My heart tells me they should be adopted together, but they can be adopted apart. They love being around other dogs. Baby Girl still had a whole lot of puppy in her. They need someone who will love and teach them. Please help me find a family that may have land and could give these two sweet babies a "FOREVER FAMILY". I have pictures of them in my pics.

Seperation Anxiety? What to do.

My little Maggie Mae seems to have seperation anxiety. She is ok in the the crate when our other dog is in the room or we are. The problem is when I let her out to go to the bathroom, I have to go with her or she won't go. I have a big privacy fenced yard. In the mornings I have been trying to let her out back, she won't leave the deck door. If I go away from the door for an extended period she will go on(urinate or bowel movement), the deck but will not go in the yard. For the last 2 weeks I have been trying to go halfway down the deck steps and then I encourage her to go the rest of the way and go in the yard. If I sit there she will, if I go in she will run back.
Any advice would be helpful. She is 5 1/2 months, part Shar Pei and I think Pitt. She came from the pound and was the only survivior of her litter. They were all abused. She had mange and intestinal parasites and worms when I got her. She is very healthy and happy and does not SEEM to be scared of anything at all except being alone.
Sheila
P.S. I also posted this on another tribe.

Left at the Dog Park...

OK, so luckily it didn't really happen, but it could have. We were at the dog park yesterday and there were too many black dogs to count on my paws, but I can tell you there were lots. I could tell my human was confused trying to find me and my sister who is also black.
Has anyone ever been left at a park? I know my human was almost given the wrong black dog at day care once, but she was paying attention that day.
How have you prepared for that day you get left while some other black dog takes off with your human?
I know my human is bound to do something like that, she's a yellow haired girl.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Prince

Zoos and Lily

Not all black, but black enough, you can see them in my album. these two are loveable trouble. We got Lily as a pup, she's the border collie and very true to her nature. She's the only one left of her litter of 12 (parvo), we managed to get shots into her soon enough. She'd been the only female and the runt to boot. Even tho there's nary a wag out of this little gal, her attentive look and willingness to play fetch (over and over and over....) wins over most people's hearts. We got her and her brother, Buster, thinking that because they're borer collies they'd keep the kids running and the kids would keep them busy. We spent the 1st year wishing we could give them away (not really...but what a pain they were!). Lily was a houdini, or a telepath or something; she was constantly getting out of her collar and harness, we think she convinced her brother to do it. Buster suffered a couple months with not being able to keep anything down. We tried everything but surgery and finally wereconvinced it was cancer, had to put him down. tear. A year later we saw a dog on tv that my husband would've liked, to be rescued. When I went to see the fella, they wouldn't let me have him 'cause he was no good with kids. Out came Zoos, (supposed to be 'Zeus' for the mighty warrior, but we all know he hasn't got a mean bone in 'im, hence the goofy spelling). man, I knew I was hooked the minute I saw him. Zoos is part Belgian Sheppard, part collie part stupid dog. I've met guys like him. REALLY cute, big, dumb, so damned loveable you can't help but falling for him. Then again, there's times when I think he's smarter than he lets on. Even tho he spent his first nights with his head stuck in the page wire in their kennel, it's he, not smart border collie Lily, who can push open the door for the kennel from the outside, bang it from the inside 'til it pops open and when you say "go get Lily" (because she's gone in the kennel for a snooze and the door swung shut in the wind so she's stuck in there, he'll not only go and open the door but goes in, and around behind her, following her out. BIG WAGS. Reason I say Lily's true to her nature is because she learned very quickly where the boundaries are for the horses and when we aren't there to take care of business, she keeps them in (really, the fence is quite sound), getting nippy if they dare to get too close to the fence. Zoos, clumsy as he is, took to learning the trade of horse herder when he first got here. He was only one yr and not as fast as our little girl. Got his teeth kicked in once (great vet did an excellent job of putting him back together) and his face ripped open another time. Like I said, not so smart. He likes to chase the coyotes off too. Scares me some bad, 'cause I know those critters will entice a dog out to play while others will come 'round behind them, cutting them off from home and safety. So far we've been lucky tho. I love these pooches.

My Molly

Molly came to me quite unexpectedly, she is an almost all black german shepherd female. She was the product of a divorce, the husband just to be nasty wouldn't let the xwife have her so he kept her. Kept her locked in a crate for 18 months.

As to how I came to get her, my daughter was dating the roomate of this x husband, he told my daughter about the dog, how the x would go away for weekends at a time leaving the dog with no food or water and the condition she was in. My daughter's boyfriend Xboyfriend) did get food for her and a bed for her crate but he didn't do enough. He should have called the authorities and had the dog removed. But anyway he told my daughter about her plight and she told me about it. I had to step in and help that dog.

My daughter spoke with the man, actually kind of threatened him to give the dog up or else. He didn't want trouble and didn't want the dog so he gave her to my daughter. My daughter had no place to bring her except home to me. One look at that big lack face and the terrible condition she was in and it was a done deal. Molly now lives with me. She had been so neglected she knew nothing, not even what toys were.

First thing I did was take her to my vet where she got a good medical evaluation. Other than having no muscle mass from being caged and no excercise she was pretty healthy. One ear doesn't stand straight because at one time she must have been hit in the head and the ear damaged, her back legs are a little bent from being crated while she was growing. Nothing I can do about her physical deformities but today she is a different dog.

First thing I did was put her on good dog food, then daily took her to the ball field to play, to teach her what its like to be a dog. To have human companionship and be loved and not caged. I had a crate for her because she got nervous and wanted to go "hide" but I left the door open and she would tip toe out to see what I was doing. She hasn't been near the crate for months now. She knows she is loved, in fact maybe to much, on her last visit to the vet he told me she has to loose 15 pounds, she's up to 102 pounds, I don't think she's fat, just big boned.

I am probably the only one who ever gave this dog a kind word and showed her any attention and she has blossomed. She now has a nice shiny coat, loves to play but most of all loves to be with me. I call her my velcro dog. We are attached at the hip, I can't move she is right under my feet. I've worked many many hours to train her to be what I want and she is a real joy to have around. Her only flaw is she is dog aggressive. I have another shepherd and at first the adjustment was rough but we got through it, they will never be best friends but they don't fight anymore. Actually her best friend is my cat, these two are so bonded I think they think they are a couple.

But back to the black dog thing, people have to realize its a dog's personality that counts, its personality you live with day in and day out, not the color of their coat. No matter what color she would have been Molly would still have a home with me. Molly has her last home, she will be with me until the day she dies. She will be 4 years old Christmas Day, will be two years I've had her in October.

Bottom line, she needed a home and I invited her to mine, best decision I ever made. She is a beauty and a joy to have around.

So for anyone reading this please look past the color of the coat and see the dog under the hair, you might be passing up a real jewel if all you are concerned with is looks!

This is what is happening in New Orleans right now folks. We need your phone calls IF any animals are going to get saved.

http://www.pasadosafehaven.org/NEWS/NEWS.htm

The post above is from tonight from the Pasado website. Here are the key points:

9/10 6:47pm PST ASCENSION PARISH SHERIFF STOPS RESCUERS FROM SHELTER - ARMED GUARDS OUTSIDE WON'T LET US IN! Because the Louisiana State Veterinarian refuses to lift the 15 day quarantine hold period, the Gonzales state-designated shelter, is now considered full by the local sheriff. The Parish Sheriff is holding Pasado Rescuers back with loaded guns, despite the fact we have full vans, loaded with animals - the result of a 19-hour-day of rescue. We need to raise hell - call local media, whoever you can, the state vet needs to cut the bureaucracy and allow foster families, from around the country, to take these animals!

We need calls to every media outlet and govt official you know.
Start with CNN, MSNBC, FOX. Then the Gov of LA (her office phones are open), and then try the White House. Can you believe the White House has closed their comment line for the weekend? So try emailing or faxing them. See phone#s below.
