he seems really thirsty but other than that I think he is doing ok
does ruby have any negitive side effects? -

prednisone is VERY dangerous for long periods of time..
itchy skin with no fleas are is almost ALWAYS food allergies!!
if your vet isn't willing to talk to you about that.. find one who will!! -

it is usually wheat in the food...
some people/dogs are lucky and don't have problems with food...
my old dog that just passed, had a horrible time with stomach problems and didn't do well with medications either.. so I learned ALOT!!!
out of my two current kids.. one is fine with anything.. the other started to get itchy right above his tail...
so to save money on the expensive food ($40-$45 a bag)
I cook for them now. its much eaisier than it sounds -

Thu, November 23, 2006 - 3:59 PMBe careful with that stuff. My dog was on it for almost his entire life. And NO ONE knew or told us how bad it was. He had to be put down, not directly because of the prednisone, but from the degenerative effects of it. I will never let another dog be put on that stuff unless it was for very briefly & there was NO other alternative.
If it's because of fleas, put a little vinegar in the dogs water. Dry skin, try some fish oil in the food regularly. This is my advice, but I am not a vet. -

Sun, November 26, 2006 - 12:03 PMYeah, my dog had allergies too. An allergy to fleas. I would ask the vet about some other treatment for allergies. Change the pup's diet maybe, dogs can easily develop an allergy to certain forms of protein. Or try adding a bit of fish oil to the pup's food. Or raw eggs. Minced garlic in the food every now & again is alright too - about half a clove per 10lbs.
A brief stint with pred might not be that bad, but I would avoid it unless there were no alternatives.
