I volunter with the local Humane Society where I live and also foster dogs from time to time. Right now, I have Tristan, the cutie pie in my profile pic. Why is it that black dogs are slower to adopt out??!! I've heard statistically adptions go small dogs over large, long hair over short and light over dark. Tristan is a beauty and we've taught him very good manners. Why doesn't any one want to adopt this sweetheart!!!! I guess only if he had purebred papers.....disgusts me.

Re: Why?
03/25My black dog, Riley, was in the shelter for 3 months and was on the "list" when we adopted him. He had only a few days left. The reason they kept him so long was because he was such a good dog and a staff favorite. In his three months there, we were the only people to request time with him. When Tom went to pick him up (I adopted him before we had even gotten there via fax) he passed him up 3 times and then when he found him, he was just sitting in the middle of his kennel, ears back and head down. It was so sad. I'm glad we got him in time. He's such a good dog and smart to boot. -

Re: Why?
03/26Awww, I'm so glad you adopted Riley! Yeay!!! I think part of the problem with adopting out lab mixes is that labs are the number one bred dog in the AKC. Sometimes the Humane Society, where I volunteer, is hesitant to take in large, black dogs b/c they are so hard to place. We don't euthanize them, so we may have them for many, many months. I'm hoping to get out more with the warm weather coming on and have more adoption fairs. Hopefully it will take the right person coming along to see Tristan in person. I'm trying to think positive, but sometimes it's discouraging when I see others get homes so quickly. -

Re: Why?
03/26Can you make him a bandana to wear saying something like "Foster Dog, up for adoption" or something? -

Re: Why?
03/30I've used Bandanas, flyers, you name it. But I have great news.....Tristan was adopted over the weekend! We had an adoption event and we had two doggies that applications were filled out for (and Tristan was one of them!). The adoptor, in my profile pic, is a great guy and my husband actually knows him too! Keep your fingers crossed everything goes well! We usually give it a 2 week trial period to make sure things are going okay before finalizing!! Yeay!

Re: Why?
04/02I've volunteered with them too, and I didn't really notice any trends like that. Maybe it's just a local trend. I have heard that in some cultures (Such as in S.E. Asia), black dogs are considered bad luck, and are outright killed.
We love ours and I've had nothing but good luck since he showed up, so there. -
