Re: how much trainin have you got?
Tue, July 4, 2006 - 10:23 AMHere is a tip for jumping dogs. It is so simple but it really works. Turn your back on the jumping dog. Tell it to sit, when it sits, praise it to the skies and give it lots of enthusiastic attention. If it starts to jump up tell it sit again and reinforce the good behavior with high pictched praise praise praise. As soon as it jumps turn your back on it. With fascist like consistency drill this behavior into your friends' heads when they come over. Jumping dog gets no attention, sitting dog gets praise and rewards, treats, toys whatever.
Do not let visitors engage a jumping dog with eye contact, shouts of "NO!" "Down" knees to the chest etc. Just have them turn their backs..
This behavior has effected miracle cures for me with jumping dogs. Like they stopped within two days...and I was skeptical that it would work....Let me know if it does for you...
Pats to Mercutio and all the black and unblack dogs everywhere... -

Re: how much trainin have you got?
Tue, July 4, 2006 - 12:17 PMthat is what we do too! It works like a charm... it is harder to control houseguests though, much more than mercutio and sunny :) -

Re: how much trainin have you got?
Tue, July 4, 2006 - 6:50 PMworked like a charm on our Squeek. She now runs up to us and sits down wagging her tail so hard her whole body wiggles. She can barely contain herself. It's soooooo freaking cute!

Re: how much trainin have you got?
Tue, July 4, 2006 - 6:56 PMMy company is really good at trying to ignore her but she scratches them so they end up cringing in pain and I have to go get her or they end up holding her down. It is really getting out of controll. She does not do it to me because I was able to wait it out when she was younger and smaller and it did not hurt so bad (I also had on long pants). We really only have a couple people over but she goes nuts when she sees them.
I'm working on it and feel sure I'll get it under controll soon. :-) -

Re: how much trainin have you got?
Tue, July 4, 2006 - 7:03 PMmy trainer said to set them up by purposely having someone they do not know over to work on this. also keep them on a leash and step on it so when they try to jump it will not let them. -

Re: how much trainin have you got?
Tue, July 4, 2006 - 7:06 PMMine told me the same stuff. The First 3 months I had her, I kept her on a leash and stepped on it. She only does well when the leash is on.
I'm going to have to try the someone she does not know thing and have them wear flannel lined pants, lol.
Have a great day

Re: how much trainin have you got?
Mon, July 3, 2006 - 7:26 PMMaggie can sit, lay, stand, watch, come front, wait, stay, come, and sometimes walk on a loose leash. I have been lax in the last few weeks with our training and she is just a pup so I have to stay on top of it or she will forget (or choose to forget). She is a very quick learner. I have not been able to get her to not jump on company short of stepping on the leash, then when I let her up she goes straight over and jumps on them.

Re: how much trainin have you got?
Mon, July 3, 2006 - 8:35 PMRiley, our black dog, has taken Good Manners 1 (2 times not because he couldn't "get it" but because we REALLY like the teacher), Good Manners 2, Clicker training, Agility 1, and started Novice 1, but got injured 3 classes in and had to drop out. Each class is 7 weeks long. He's a VERY good dog. Our other dog is just starting her first Good Manners 1 class. I'd like to get her up to competition agility because she's so fast and agile. -

Re: how much trainin have you got?
Mon, July 3, 2006 - 10:19 PMruby knows sit, she knows it really well, especially when a treat is in the balance. she also knows down, when a treat is in view.
she's not so good at stay, especially when she's down.
but this weekend is hard. because rubydawg doesn't dig the noise.
so i'll spend my time making a calming space for my dawg. -

Re: how much trainin have you got?
Mon, July 10, 2006 - 5:37 AMMolly May never went to dog school, but she's really smart and knows enough tricks that she could probably join a carnival. She knows how to sit - give her paw - give her other paw - sit up pretty (on her back two) - spin around in a cirlce - lay down and roll over.
She can also look so adorable that you must give her a bite of whatever you have.
We tried and tried the jump through a hula hoop trick, but she wouldn't do it...not once. -

Re: how much trainin have you got?
Wed, July 12, 2006 - 9:51 AMI'm really smart too, and stubborn. More so than my human, so I take her to classes. So far we did class 1 and 2. I was going to try for my good citizen award, but I really don't like to "stay". It's not that I can't, I just choose not to.
My sister though, gets to do agility. I guess my human has different issues with her. She has tons of energy. I prefer to lounge myself.
