My little Maggie Mae seems to have seperation anxiety. She is ok in the the crate when our other dog is in the room or we are. The problem is when I let her out to go to the bathroom, I have to go with her or she won't go. I have a big privacy fenced yard. In the mornings I have been trying to let her out back, she won't leave the deck door. If I go away from the door for an extended period she will go on(urinate or bowel movement), the deck but will not go in the yard. For the last 2 weeks I have been trying to go halfway down the deck steps and then I encourage her to go the rest of the way and go in the yard. If I sit there she will, if I go in she will run back.
Any advice would be helpful. She is 5 1/2 months, part Shar Pei and I think Pitt. She came from the pound and was the only survivior of her litter. They were all abused. She had mange and intestinal parasites and worms when I got her. She is very healthy and happy and does not SEEM to be scared of anything at all except being alone.

P.S. I also posted this on another tribe.

Re: Seperation Anxiety? What to do.

I am not a dog trainer.... but ... seperation anixiety is actually when you leave your dog alone, and they either howl, bark or destroy things...
unfortunatley.... I think time and patience is all you can do to help her get over being afraid of her new yard.... does she ever play in the yard with your other dog?? I bet once she is more comfortable she'll be more brave.... shelter dogs need a lttle extra patience with some things...
my dogs totally learn both good and bad things from each other... sooooo maybe if you let them out together??? she'll get the idea?? -

Re: Seperation Anxiety? What to do.
Mon, June 19, 2006 - 7:52 PMYeah, letting themout together is a good idea. If i had a housetained dog with me, it was very easy to housetrain another dog, 'cause they picked it up from the trained one.
Another thing to do is to take her out by herself and teke her all the way in the yard. Hopefully somewhere she has already peed or poohed, the snmell lingers...and order her to do her business. I mean like in a happy voice..like pee or pooh! You should do this when ya know she has to go...and then be all ecstatic when she does...
We can actually get Blue to pee because we used to do this, we'd watch her til it looked like she needed to...then take her outside and say Pee! And when she did we praised her a LOT. So now she will pee for us...it helps if we are in a hurry which sometimes we are, like when it is raining..lol...
You do take her out in the yard and hang out with her don't you? She will probably feel more confident if you are there and like Jellin says give her lots of time...she is still a young puppy... -

Re: Seperation Anxiety? What to do.
Tue, June 20, 2006 - 10:32 AMHi You'all, thanks for the replies. I do let them out together when I get home from work but the older dog hates to be out of the house and will go right through the doggie door into the basement if I don't let him right back in the upstairs. In the morning the older dog won't come out of under the bed till about 1030 am when my husband gets up then he acts like you kill him when you make him go out. This means Maggie has to go out with just me in the am.
She is housetrained and will pee and poop on command but one of us has to be with her. This morning I tried again to get her to go without me and she acted like I shot her. I've had her for about 3.5 months. I think I will talk to my dog trainer tonight and see what see has to say. I also have the email of my trainers, trainer. I could not afford her but she is up for advice on line. I keep you all posted.
Have a wonderful day, Sheila
